Studio Art (B.A.) Two-Dimensional Studies Concentration

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Studio Arts is designed to provide students with both breadth and depth. At the completion of their program art students demonstrate a knowledge of several areas of art and design along with one in depth area. Studio Art majors must maintain a 2.5 grade point average in their major to remain in the program.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates from Messiah’s Studio Art program can:

1. Apply a basic knowledge of foundational design skills used for composing & evaluating visual arts.
2. Understand of the relationship between the arts and other areas of study such as history, philosophy, religion, social sciences, and technology.
3. Identify themes, historical time periods and cultural context of visual arts
4. Analyze art and write in a clear and coherent fashion. Demonstrates an ability to research, process and write about the visual arts
5. Compose and execute foundation level projects.
6. Critique work using appropriate terms and concepts
7. Apply emerging technologies to solving visual problems/projects
8. Display mastery and depth in concentration area
9. Present first-hand knowledge of working with professionals in their field
10. Relate studio experience to employment possibilities.
11. Apply skills in the service of not-for-profits and marginalized sectors of society.
12. Display an incipient understanding of the historical and formal connections between Christianity and the visual arts.
13. Articulate the relationship between faith and creative work.
