SUST 140 Introduction to Ecology and Sustainability

Students will learn about ecological principles and how these are applied to natural and agricultural ecosystems. Students will discuss the three aspects of sustainability - ecological, economic and social. Students will study the trophic levels in ecosystems, biomes, and global biogeochemical cycles (hydrologic, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles) as a foundation to understanding global environmental issues. The study of the interactions within and between species (competition, predation, parasitism, mutualism) will be connected to population ecology and applied to conservation of biodiversity.
