BALT 101 Introduction to Public Health and Epidemiology

This course combines classroom lectures, seminar discussions, and field learning experiences to facilitate learning foundational concepts of public health and epidemiology. Beginning with an introduction to nomenclature and principles of population-based disease prevention, transmission, and treatment, students engage in field learning site visits to agencies and nonprofit organizations in Baltimore, MD., New York, NY., Philadelphia, PA., and Washington DC. Analysis of historic case studies and current interviews with clients and staff of diverse agencies provide learning opportunities into the interdisciplinary links between social determinants of health, political determinants of health, and the bio-medical model of sickness and health.
