POLI 352 American Presidency

This course examines important readings (both primary and secondary) on the American presidency, paying special attention to the historical evolution of the office. After discussing competing visions of the presidency, we will review the development of the presidential selection system. Next, we will approach the office “topically” – that is, with a focus both on the president’s different roles and on the relationship between the office and other political actors, both in and out of government. At the same time, we will never lose sight of the ways in which these various roles and relationships originated and changed over time.
