History (B.A.) with Administrative Studies Concentration

Program Overview

In addition to intensive examination of a wide range of historical periods and subjects, the history major allows room for students to pursue other studies. For example, some take a second major, and many complete minors in areas from English, foreign languages, economics, and journalism to communication, business, and politics. Students are also required to seek experiential learning, either through study abroad or through an internship experience.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates from Messiah’s History program can:

1. Comprehend significant ideas, people, events, and social phenomena that have contributed to the formation of United States, Western, and World History
2. Demonstrate an historical understanding of causation, change, and continuity
3. Interpret the array of primary sources relevant to different sub-fields of history
4. Understand the diverse methods and interpretive models employed in contemporary historical research
5. Understand the historiographical traditions important to the modern discipline of history
6. Write substantial research and analysis papers based on primary sources and contextualized in terms of relevant historiographical discussions
7. Manage the challenges and opportunities of teaching history within the secondary school social studies construct (for students pursuing social studies certification)
8. Conduct basic historical research and to communicate research results and analysis in effective written communication
