EDUC 346 Socio-Cultural Perspectives on Education

Examines contemporary issues on diversity and pluralism in schools and society and discusses how sociocultural variables including race, ethnicity, gender, culture, socio-economic class, sexuality, ability, language, religion, spatial location, and age impact schooling and learning. Provides new insights for students to examine how power and identity shape classroom pedagogy, and critiques current school practices as a way to promote classroom and school environment that is supportive of all students, their communities, and teachers. Employ critical “reconstructionist” pedagogy and “Christian faith” frameworks as the underlying philosophy, and focuses on knowledge, reflection, and action (praxis) as the basis for social justice and change.
