Biochemistry (B.A.) / Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) St. Joseph's University
Program Overview
This curricular plan is specifically meant to couple to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at St. Joseph's University. Upon completion of these requirements, and satisfactory completion of all additional requirements of St. Joseph's University, a student will be eligible to enter the 1st Professional Year of the Pharm.D. Program at St. Joseph's University in their fourth year. The B.A. in Biochemistry from Messiah University will be awarded after completion of this first professional year, with appropriate courses transferred back for the Messiah University requirements. For more information about this Messiah University program, please refer to the Pre-Health Programs section of this catalog.
Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates from Messiah’s Biochemistry program can:
- Describe the fundamental principles and applications of chemistry.
- Describe the structure and composition of matter.
- Describe the major reaction types in chemistry.
- Apply the laws and principles of equilibrium, thermodynamics, and kinetics to chemical systems.
- Apply mathematical tools to the study of chemical systems.
- Describe the chemical processes that enable living systems to function.
- Work effectively and safety in the laboratory.
- Apply central techniques for characterizing chemical compounds and mixtures.
- Integrate personal Christian faith to the discipline of chemistry or biochemistry.
- Compose abstracts, written lab reports or research summaries according to the standards of the American Chemical Society.
- Obtain, organize, and present information from the primary literature.
- Identify careers in chemistry that connect with one’s vocational call.
- Analyze and respond ethically to case studies that demonstrate common moral dilemmas in the chemical or biochemical workplace.
