HLTH 836 Neuroscience of Pain

This course explores the neurobiological systems and mechanisms underlying both acute and chronic pain as they relate to PT. Topics include nociceptive and sensory systems, molecular basis 
and modulation of pain, neuroanatomy of peripheral and central pain circuits, pain pathologies, and pharmacological and non -pharmacological treatments. Emphasis is on understanding basic neurobiological concepts underlying pain systems and reading and discussing the primary scientific research in the field. The course will also include topics on social determinants of health and their impact on pain presentation, and how to identify patients at risk of pain catastrophizing. The student will also learn strategies aimed at intervening in patients presenting with pain.
