Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates from Messiah’s Music Education program can:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to explain the foundational content, practices and philosophical and ethical assumptions of Music Education.
  2. Identify, access, and synthesize research in the field of music education.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency on a major instrument or voice and demonstrate proficiency in pedagogical and assessment skills in working with a diverse group of learners.
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of options for employment and/or graduate level education in the field of music education and reflect on suitability for a career in music and/or music education.
  5. Demonstrate mature reflection on their own faith as it informs their work as musicians and their career choices.

All music majors will register for Keyboard I in order to prepare for the Piano Proficiency Exam. Students who successfully pass the exam at the end of the Fall Semester will fulfill the other keyboard credit with any music course. Students who do not pass (or attempt) the exam in the fall will register for Keyboard II in the Spring Semester. Students who do not pass the exam at the end of the Spring Semester will register for MUAP Piano lessons until the exam is passed. Students are allowed three attempts to pass the exam.
