SPAN 314 The Counter Reformation and the Spanish Baroque

This course studies the literature, art and history of 17th Century Spain through the reading of literary texts. We will use a cultural approach to perform a critical reading of these texts. Reading these texts will allow student to develop a knowledge of its literary productions as well as the religious, political and philosophical culture of the time. The work in this class allows for students’ development of critical and analytical sensitivity to literary language. We will discuss how the authors respond to the normative ideologies of their own times and approach literary, aesthetic, social, political and cultural issues.
