Mathematics (B.A.) with Secondary Teaching Certification

Program Overview

Mathematics majors learn to appreciate the logical beauty of mathematical thought and how to use it to solve many kinds of problems. After taking the foundational courses, students choose from theoretical and applied mathematics courses as they pursue their career objectives. Through the internship program, they may gain practical experience. Graduates are prepared for employment as mathematicians in a variety of settings in industry, business, and government, and for graduate study. By taking the sequence of education courses, they can be certified to teach secondary mathematics (gr. 7-12).

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates from Messiah’s Mathematics program can:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of foundational content of mathematics defined through the Mathematical Association of America.    
  2. Engage in scholarship in mathematics, demonstrating the professional skills of independent problem-solving, self-directed research, and oral and written communication.
  3. Skill in using appropriate technology to enhance understanding of mathematics and related disciplines, to simplify computation, and to present work professionally.
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of options for employment, voluntary service and/or graduate education in mathematics or closely related fields.
  5. Articulate a maturing understanding of how faith connects to mathematics.

Additionally, graduates from Messiah's Teacher Education Program can: 

  1. Explain the theoretical foundations for teaching and learning.
  2. Describe the foundations of special education.
  3. Articulate a grounded philosophy of education including critical ethical dimensions of being an educator.
  4. Explain and/or apply core information, concepts, and principles in the academic content area(s).
  5. Identify, access, and synthesize research in the field of education including evidence-based practices.
  6. Use knowledge of students in instructional planning and decision-making.
  7. Demonstrate principles of instructional design in instructional planning and assessment.
  8. Demonstrate principles of effective and ethical classroom management.
  9. Demonstrate proficiency in pedagogical and assessment skills.
  10. Identify personal options for employment, voluntary service, and/or graduate education in the field of Education based on knowledge of the field and one’s own strengths and interests.
  11. Demonstrate reflective practice and awareness of professional strengths and weaknesses.
  12. Articulate how faith connects to the field of Education and to potential career options in the field of Education

Note: Students considering secondary mathematics teaching as one of several career options in mathematical sciences are encouraged to complete an additional 6 credits of MATH/STAT 3xx/4xx courses. This allows you to graduate with a Mathematics degree in addition to Teaching Certification.
