Physics (B.A.) with Secondary Teaching Certification

Program Overview

Messiah’s Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in physics degree program provides you with a rigorous, multi-faceted educational experience combined with a solid introduction into computer science and statistics—all in a Christian context. You’ll take courses such as such as Classical and Analytical Mechanics; Electricity and Magnetism; and Quantum Mechanics and study with professors who have a variety of scholarly interests from cosmic ray detection to thin film physics.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates from Messiah’s Physics program can:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational theories, principles and concepts of physics.
  2. Retrieve, read and discuss primary scientific literature.
  3. Communicate physics concepts, processes and results effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Apply content knowledge to independent problem solving in the physical sciences.
  5. Engage with the art of experiment through experimental design, experimental performance, quantitative data analysis, and scientific reporting.
  6. Utilize technology for computational problem solving.
  7. Identify and evaluate their vocation as it relates to their faith and career options in the physical sciences or related fields.

Additionally, graduates from Messiah's Teacher Education Program can: 

  1. Explain the theoretical foundations for teaching and learning.
  2. Describe the foundations of special education.
  3. Articulate a grounded philosophy of education including critical ethical dimensions of being an educator.
  4. Explain and/or apply core information, concepts, and principles in the academic content area(s).
  5. Identify, access, and synthesize research in the field of education including evidence-based practices.
  6. Use knowledge of students in instructional planning and decision-making.
  7. Demonstrate principles of instructional design in instructional planning and assessment.
  8. Demonstrate principles of effective and ethical classroom management.
  9. Demonstrate proficiency in pedagogical and assessment skills.
  10. Identify personal options for employment, voluntary service, and/or graduate education in the field of Education based on knowledge of the field and one’s own strengths and interests.
  11. Demonstrate reflective practice and awareness of professional strengths and weaknesses.
  12. Articulate how faith connects to the field of Education and to potential career options in the field of Education

Note: Students who are considering secondary physics teaching as one of several career options are encouraged to complete an additional six credits of ENGR 367 and ENGR 371. This allows you to graduate with a Physics degree, if you choose, while still maintaining Pennsylvania Secondary Teaching Certification.
