ENGL 334 Victorian Literature

This course examines selected poetry and prose of the Victorian era in the context of the challenges posed to traditional Christian faith by the advent of new discoveries in science and new critical approaches to reading biblical texts that challenged long-standing interpretations both of particular biblical texts and of what kind of book the Bible is. The primary focus will be on the Victorian novel, especially George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. This course falls in the Questions of Faith in Literature category.
