Academic Forgiveness Policy
Undergraduate ADP, baccalaureate degree seeking and certificate seeking students who re-enroll at Messiah University following a four-year consecutive absence from the university, may apply for Academic Forgiveness. Academic Forgiveness results in the recalculation of a student’s cumulative GPA according to the following parameters:
- All previous Messiah University courses will remain on the student’s academic record and transcript.
- Courses previously used to fulfill/complete a Messiah University credential (certificate or degree) are not eligible for forgiveness. These credits and respective grades will remain unchanged on the student’s academic record and transcript and will be used in calculating the cumulative GPA.
- Previously completed Messiah University courses with grades of C- and above are not eligible for exclusion. These courses will be used to satisfy credit requirements (general education, major, minor, concentration or elective requirements) and will be used to calculate the cumulative GPA.
- All other courses with grades below C- are eligible for forgiveness. Students must request specific courses for forgiveness. When courses are approved for forgiveness, they are given the notation of “E” (excluded). There is no limit on the number of courses/credits below a C- that can be given the “E” notation on the transcript. Excluded courses do not satisfy credit requirements (general education, major, minor, concentration or elective requirements) and are not used in calculating the student’s cumulative GPA.
- Academic forgiveness, excluded courses, and GPA recalculation once enacted cannot be reversed.
