HIST 212 Medieval Europe

A study of the cultural, social, economic, religious, and political developments in Europe from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. Major themes include the emergence of distinctively European institutions and modes of thought, Christian spirituality, and cultural interactions with Jewish, Byzantine, and Islamic communities. Learning outcomes include developing fluency in the methods of historical inquiry through analysis of material and textual artifacts; discovering the wide diversity of peoples, ideas, cultures, societies, material conditions, and religious practice in premodern Europe; communicating one’s own discoveries and ideas effectively to others, and discerning intersections between Christian faith and the discipline of history.
