HIST 273 History of Asia to 1500 CE

Students examine the varied, complex, and rich histories of the human experience across Asia before 1500 CE. Discover the new patterns of order and interaction that characterized the intercultural history of the continent, including the growth of political complexity from minor kingdoms to imperial formations, the emergence of sophisticated worldviews, nomadic, and Islamic cultures, debates around “feudalism,” forms of premodern globalization, and histories of the marginalized. Students engage the Global South in ways that enhance intercultural literacy and self-awareness without losing sight of the complexities at play in premodern Asia.
