Students examine the varied, complex, and rich histories of the human experience across the globe before 1500 CE. Explore the intercultural history of the planet when new patterns of order and interaction emerged to connect the world in unprecedented ways, including the growth of political complexity from chiefdoms to imperial formations, the emergence of sophisticated worldviews, nomadic, and Islamic cultures, “feudalism,” forms of premodern globalization, and subaltern histories. Students engage the complexities of the premodern history of the Global South in ways that enhance intercultural literacy and self-awareness.
