Spanish Minor

(18 credits beyond SPAN 201)
The Spanish minor encompasses a wide variety of courses to study the language itself, as well as the history, literature, culture, and civilization of the Spanish-speaking peoples. Introductory level courses focus on grammar, phonetics, conversation, composition and culture and are taught with an emphasis on oral proficiency. Intermediate and advanced courses are taught in Spanish and can be completed on campus or during a study abroad semester.

Students who do not study at the Universidad de Grenada (Spain) or ISA San Jose, Costa Rica may include a cross-cultural course (IDCG 270 Global or IDCD 270 Domestic) to a Spanish-speaking country or cultural population/language community directed by a faculty member from the Department of Language, Literature and Writing (or by approval of the Department Chair). Among the fifteen additional credits, assignments for the cross-cultural course must be completed in Spanish.

Option 2: Fifteen additional credits fulfilled at Universidad de Grenada (Spain), or ISA San Jose, Costa Rica.

Students may select among a variety of humanities courses that may include art history, culture, grammar, literature, or political science. Students should confirm with the Department of Language, Literature and Writing that the courses that they select are approved for the Spanish minor.

Note: Students who demonstrated proficiency to the 201 level need to take 18 credits at the 206 level and higher.
